pjnichols got their new book cover by running a design contest:
Design an ebook cover for a middle grade adventure novel

P.J.Nichols is an independent author, and this is his first novel. He hopes his adventure story will be as fun for people to read as it was for him to write.
“Puzzled” is an adventure story (I’d like to think of it as a combination of “Harry Potter” and “Goonies” and “Indiana Jones”), where the main character (and 2 of his friends) have to solve a series of challenging puzzles and riddles. Here is the book blurb: Being the exceptionally clever kid in your junior high school has its disadvantages. Some people think you’re weird. Some call you names. And some don’t even talk to you. Peter experiences all of these, and more, on a daily basis. But after school, none of that matters. He can hole himself up in his room, and challenge his mind with complex riddles, puzzles, and games. But Peter’s talent for solving things suddenly becomes more than just a passion. Much, much more. Peter and a few friends are pulled into an adventure where they have to solve a series of incredibly difficult puzzles and riddles. If they can’t solve them all, a powerful supernatural being will cause horrific destruction all over the planet.
It’s a middle grade adventure novel, so I need a cover that will appeal to ages 10-15 (plus older teens and possibly adults too).
Ideally, I’d like an illustrated cover with no stock images. In my mind, the “ideal” cover would show the main character and his 2 friends, and would include one (or a few) of the images from the puzzles/riddles they have to solve. The main character: Peter - a grade 7 boy (12 years old, turns 13 during the story): Very “average-looking” kid. No glasses. Exceptionally clever. He loves games/riddles/puzzles. The other important characters (2 of his classmates): Nicola - girl - same age (12/13): Tall, and attractive for her age. Long hair. No glasses. Has braces. Neil - boy - same age (12/13): Tall, skinny, funny-looking kid. No glasses. Messy hair. Wears over-sized T-shirts and shorts. Here are a few of the puzzles/riddles: **UPDATE** If you are just starting a new design now, I’d like to request one of, or a combination of, puzzles 1, 3 and 4 on the cover. (I have already received a lot of entries which show puzzle number 2.) 1. A room with a giant “chessboard/checkerboard-like floor”, where each square is 80cm by 80cm. (It’s 8 squares wide and 14 long.) And each square has a number “1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6” on it. The numbers are arranged randomly (They have to figure out which ones to step on to get across). 2. 3 identical doors, which are at the end of 3 paths (they walk through a forest to get to this puzzle). Only one is the right door. (They have to figure out which one). 3. A small room (made of bricks), with a huge pile of keys in it. They have to figure out which key opens the deadbolt lock on the door. 4. A “hall or mirrors” maze - the type that kids go to at amusement parks. It’s a maze of twisting paths with mirrors and windows. (They have to find their way through, but they have a time-limit) There are many more, but I think these are the best ones for the cover. I have attached a file (with examples of 4 book covers that I think look fantastic). This is my first novel, and also my first time to use 99designs. I am very open to any and all ideas. Basically, I just want a “cool” cover. One that will make readers think, “Wow! This looks like a cool adventure book!” If sales go well for the ebook, then I will publish a paperback edition in the future (when/if I do, I hope ask the same designer to help make the paperback cover). I have also started writing a sequel (which won’t be ready for at least a year), and would like to work with the same designer when the time comes for it to be published as well.
What to avoid
If possible, I would like a cover that has no stock images.

And then… they selected a winner!
Another fantastic experience working with Thomas! His hard work and dedication are helping my book series continue to grow in popularity! I would highly recommend him to anyone in search of a designer!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
