How haylie.hanson started their book cover journey
Calliope Jones and The Last World Diver
Haylie Machado Hanson
Haylie has been writing books since she was six years old. This is her first published work. She holds a B.A. in psychology from Fresno Pacific University and an M.Ed. from the University of Utah. She is married and has one son, two fuzzy cats, and a silly corgi. She is originally from California, but currently lives wherever the Air Force tells her to.
Babysitter. Peacekeeper. Middle child. Ignored. That's sixteen-year-old Calliope Jones, the oddball ‘average’ kid in a family full of ultra-talented siblings. Being ordinary is just fine by Callie, who prefers to spend her days surfing the waters of California and trying to survive the dramas of high school. But when a rogue storm washes a mysterious, glowing object into the surf, she begins to discover she isn’t as ordinary as she thought. Callie is drawn into the fantastical world of Dr. Ormonde and the giant World Diver, filled with stories of Navigators, Seers, living robots, gateways to other worlds, and ominous, deadly Shadowmancers. Callie is skeptical of Dr. Ormonde's strange theories, until a dark presence thought long dead comes hunting her, threatening to hurt those she holds dear...she must decide if she is truly the ordinary teenager she thought she was, or if she and the World Diver share a destiny greater than she can imagine.
Kids/teenagers between the ages of 14-18, also adults who enjoy reading young adult fiction.
Book cover type
What colors do you want to see in your design?
So, like I said, this book takes place in a beach town, and the ocean figures heavily into the story, particularly whirlpools. The protagonist is 16 years old, female, brown hair and eyes, if that is something you need to know. Her World Diver is (as described in the book) a 50 foot tall robot, bronze, with a domed head and a steam punk kind of look. The thread of light, another important story element, is about 14 inches long and emits bright, white light. You do not have to include these elements at all, but if it helps you to know these details when you are designing, awesome. I'm not looking for an super photorealistic illustration. I prefer stylized art. This book is intended for teenage audiences from the age of 14-18, so appeal to the target audience is important to me. A look that appeals to teenagers and other readers of young adult fiction is my top priority. Book dimensions will be 5.5 inches by 8.25 inches or thereabouts, length is 225-250 (formatting has not yet been finalized, so I'm not 100% sure on page count, but it will be between those numbers). The mood of the story is fun and adventurous. There are some mild dark elements at the end, but it never gets very bogged down in serious drama. I have no preferences for font styles.
What to avoid
Please do not use stock images. I don't really like monochrome or very dark artwork, either. It does not fit into the theme of the story at all.
