A small but important design element for a web application
Check out Kris_Walker's Button or icon contest…
A web application which sells coupons for mom and pop merchants in small towns. The application is in the pre-launch stages, and going through a design change.
What's your vision?
I need a set of two small graphics (web artwork) for a specific web application we are working on. This application is a clone of the coupon websites like Groupon and Living Social (yes, another clone... don't ask). Specifically, we need some graphics for the headline-summary component of the coupons and deals. The layout for this component has already been designed, but the the actual artwork is still missing. I've attached an image of the layout mockup as "daily_deal.png", but you can also see it from my Dropbox account here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7363403/demos/boyt_99design/daily_deal.png The 2 small callouts outlined in yellow in this mockup are the parts which I'm primarily focused on being delivered from you. They could be rectangular shaped, star bursts, price tag, or whatever other idea you may come up with. I attached screenshots showing some other examples of previous work from similar products. Right now, unless you come up with something fantastically different, we are favoring an element design which gives a 3D illusion with shading, gradients, and shadows. If, however, your design for these 2 specific elements necessarily extends out to the underlying parts of the component, I would place a higher consideration to submissions which also include additional supporting graphics. These elements are the "call to action" elements for the most critical design component of the application. So important, in fact, that we will re-design the layout based on the quality design we get from you. So, the mockup and examples are just starting points... let your mind wander from there wherever it may. The heading image is included in the mockup just for historical reference, so don't put too much weight on it. We do need to stay within the general color palette defined by: #ff7400 Orange and #1767b4 Blue. Of course, feel free to use different shades or variations as needed. Also, we are going for a "mom and pop" local merchant look and feel rather than the "dollar store" look (if that helps at all). We also believe that whitespace can be valuable... Cramped designs are generally frowned on. The rest of the page design will be built out by our development team with standard HTML and CSS consistent with the look and feel of the two bits of artwork we get from you. Please feel free to suggest changes to the layout as needed to fit any inspired design elements you may think of. DELIVERABLE FORMAT Vector graphics please. Adobe Fireworks or Inkscape would be great. ATTACHED FILES I also attached some screen shot samples of how some of these other coupon applications are doing this, so feel free to borrow ideas, or suggest a better design pattern if an inspired idea comes your way.
The owner of this project (not me) already hired a "design team" to design the website. However, as the development firm responsible for the project, we've been really disappointed in the results. We redesigned the layout of the coupon pages according to modern standards and best web practices, but we're not finding the right bit of inspiration regarding the artwork for this new layout. We're hoping to tap into more creative power, and reward someone for helping us out with these two small, but very important, bits of artwork. From there we can create the rest of the look and feel with core compentency; HTML and CSS HOW TO WIN: Although I value originality, I do not put a premium on it: "Great Artists Steal". The winning design will be something that communicates the great savings of a coupon, on behalf of the merchant who is selling it. Although originality is nice, there are certain expectations consumers have formed around retailing, coupons, and e-commerce. I believe the design process is iterative, and that the best design results from the work of others. So, I will not be making this a blind contest, but will give my word to be sure the original designer of a particular concept will be given every opportunity to revise their design, and be awarded the win, even if there are some copy cats who submit good work. This design element is so central to the experience the user will have with this product, it will become the focal point of the rest of the design. Feel free to be creative and break the rules, but keep the retail industry conventions in mind.
