An illustration for a book cover on organization for leaders. The title is Clockwork: Tested routines and proven strategies for success. The book talks about how to implement daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly routines into your day so you can get out in front of it all and lead. In the introduction, I share a story about being a child stuck on a merry-go-round and being stuck with the spin as a result of some neighborhood friends that continue to spin the thing. I make the connection to being an adult and that there are now adults that help contribute to the spin of your world. For the image, I would like to see a merry-go-round at a slight angle that has a clock face on the base of the merry-go-round. It might be an illustration with a watch on a wrist or just a stand alone clock face. Another idea is to have children on one side of the merry-go-round and adults on the other. It is a merry-go-round similar to what you might find on a playground and not a carousel with horses at a fair.
Here is the text of the book that contains the reference to the spin of a merry-go-round as a child and an adult. Did you have a favorite piece of playground equipment as a child? Was it a very large swing set? Or, perhaps, the monkey bars? (Both of these are basically outlawed today, by the way.) What about the merry-go-round? For some, the merry-go-round was a source of endless childhood joy; a place where they could spin endlessly, out of control, become dizzy and enjoy a great laugh. For others – those children susceptible to motion sickness - the merry-go-round was to be avoided. Far too often, there was one kid from the neighborhood who took too much joy in turning the merry-go-round faster and faster, ignoring the pleas of some unfortunate kid who did not enjoy the feeling of spinning endlessly, out of control. Fast forward to adulthood. There is still a merry-go-round. You can find it in the office and at home. There are still “kids,” (okay, now co-workers,) who enjoy spinning your world and controlling your whirlwind. How much of the spin do you control? Is it healthy to believe that you can control some or all of the spin? Would you like to? This book will help you control your merry-go-round. It will help you balance the spinning of your day, night, and life. Everyone falls prey to the spin, and the speed of the world is surely not slowing. We need to recognize the spin and implement a system of routines to manage it.
