How Robby Macdonell started their landing page design journey
Who are you known as?
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
RescueTime is an application that helps people understand how they spend their time on the computer. It automatically keeps a record of the different websites and applications that a person is spending time with, and then gives them useful reports about how they spend their time. They also get some powerful tools that let them optimize and make changes to how they’re spending their time.
It's really useful for anyone that spends a lot of time in front of a computer but particularly people with technical or creative jobs. Software developers, writers, designers, students and entrepreneurs make up a large chunk of the existing RescueTime user base.
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
What do you have in mind for the style and theme of the landing page?
Open to any style. I’ll provide some colors (in the asset folder on dropbox) that we use in the application, but the designs do not need to be limited to those colors.
Conceptual themes that have worked well for us in the past:
1. A focus on a sense of personal balance
2. Self optimization / life hacking / become your best self
3. An antidote to the chaotic nature of the typical multi-tasking office environment
These designs should be optimized for international use, so I’d like to avoid imagery that suggests a particular culture or region.
Elements to include in the landing page
Sign up form (email address, choose password, confirm password, submit button)
This landing page is for a new marketing campaign that targets international English speaking audiences as well as a few select non English-speaking countries. These landing pages will ultimately be translated into different languages, so I’d prefer more visual explanations instead of large chunks of copy whenever possible.
We’re targeting free signups with this landing page, not our premium product (although it’s fine to make reference to it). These landing pages should convey the benefits of our free service and prompt people to sign up for new RescueTime Lite accounts.
Sketch documents are preferred as a final output format, but Photoshop docs are fine, too.
