NMLS (Nationwide Multistate Licensing System) is a web based system that provides 62 independent state and federal regulators a single system to manage financial related (mortgage, money transmission, check cashers, etc.) licensing for individuals and companies. It also provides a public portal (nmlsconsumeraccess.org) that consumers can use to verify that the company or individual they are working with is properly licensed and if there is a history of negative issues with the individual or company. NMLS itself does not grant or deny license authority.
NMLS brings together varying state processes and procedures for licensing into a single flow that permits state and federal regulators to share information instantly through the system. It also creates efficiencies for industry in aligning license requirements and processes so they only have to be completed once as opposed to being done for each individual state in separate systems.
Theme: Enhancing and streamlining consumer protections through partnership with regulators, industry, and technology.
Audience: Regulators, financial services industries, and the general public (consumers).

We are redesigning and re-envisioning a new NMLS (Nationwide Multistate Licensing System), a RegTech tool, (regulation-technology). The focus of the redesigned system is to be more intuitive and user-focused for a wide range of financial services industries and regulators. Some of the key principles of the new system include dynamic user interfaces, streamlined approval processes, real-time data, and adaptability. A primary goal is to support a regulatory paradigm shift from a manual one-off review process to the utilization of risk metrics, and real-time data to streamline license approval and the examination process.
