University Growth Fund is the largest student-run venture capital investment firm in the US. Students participate from multiple universities and make investments in privately held companies under the guidance of the professional fund managers. All investments are made as co-investments alongside other larger venture capital and private equity firms. Investments cover a wide range of industries including health care, internet technology, education, software, smart appliance and hardware, etc. UGF is based in Salt Lake City, Utah with the future goal of expanding to several campuses across the country.
Logo types to explore
UGF is the successor of University Venture Fund (logo uploaded), an $18M student-run venture capital firm that was launched to help bridge the gap between the real world and the classroom. We are not huge fans of that logo and feel that it is a little too dark and doesn’t communicate what we want (the idea was a student and an investor working together to hold up the V – venture). We do like the logo we developed for our conference and the idea of using a crest and mountains in general, however it needs to be updated, different. We target three different groups: students that might want to join our organization, professional investors at other funds that we want to invest alongside, and entrepreneur/companies that we want to invest in. This means we need to communicate that we are student-run (people usually want to help students), we are professional (just because we are students, we still do really good work and should respected accordingly), and we are an investment firm (so that entrepreneurs recognize us as a funding source). As for colors, we’d like to move away from so much red as red is usually used to denote losses in our industry. That said, red is the color of one of the local universities and we aren’t against some of it either. The color scheme of the logo is important though as those colors will be used in our website, published documents, and other marketing materials. Also, no mortar boards, globes, chalkboards, etc. This should be convey a professional level investment firm with a student twist.
