Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
I am an academic. I need to make a process look simple and clear. My target audience is people that are unfamiliar with private equity investing and private equity financial reporting.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
I have included an ugly graphic that shows the process I want to be designed. I am looking for a way to explain how dollars are invested and how investments are reported back to investors. The process is as follows: Savers (e.g. pension retirees, foundations or universities) employ trustees and portfolio managers (e.g. pension fund managers like CalPERS) determine how best to invest (allocate) capital across investments. In selecting private equity investments, a portfolio manager of a pension fund or endowment selects a private equity firm (e.g. Bain Capital) and invests in their next fund becoming a limited partner (LP). LPs commit to provide a specific amount of capital to the fund (committed capital) to be called (capital call) and returned (distribution) at the complete discretion of the private equity firm manager (e.g. Bain Capital), who is the general partner in the fund (GP). Once an acquisition target is found (direct deal) the private equity manager issues a capital call to the investors for the purchase. Capital is returned to the investors once the investment is sold. The portfolio company in the private equity fund provides financial statements to the GP where no NAV estimations are made related to the LPs investment. The GP takes those reports and determines a NAV estimation for the investment which is reported to the manager of the pension fun. The limited partner uses this accounting NAV estimation received in reports from the private equity firm, in annual reporting to Savers.
The graphic is an ugly but accurate explanation of what is going on. I just need to make it look good. I don't need it to be flashy or distracting. Just simple and elegant. Academics are my audience.
