99designs shares its love for the color orange with the Netherlands. The royal family is called the “House of Orange-Nassau”, orange (“oranje” in Dutch) is the nickname for the national soccer team, and the national flag (red, white and blue) proudly flies with an orange pennant above it. The color orange has come to symbolize the country and national pride, so we’d love a **dash** of orange incorporated in the business card. Try to avoid over-the-top use of Dutch colors, we're NOT celebrating Queensday with this card. (Google: "Queensday Amsterdam") Large enterprises and non-governmental organizations in the Netherlands can be awarded with the designation “royal” (“koninklijke” in Dutch) and are allowed to incorporate a crown in their logo. You can take a look at the logos of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Royal Dutch Shell, Royal Philips Electronics and KPN (attached) for inspiration. We feel that an innovative version of a crown could be a great feature on the King’s business card. Thinking of typically Dutch things (and a quick Google search) you’ll quickly come across images of tulips, windmills, cheese, clogs, and more tulips. These stereotypes are overused, so if you do choose to use them, please do so in a non-traditional way. Try to think outside the box and come up with something less obvious. Also consider the rich history of Dutch art (from Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh to Mondriaan etc.), the Dutch obsession with bicycles, chocolate sprinkles on toast, herring, the Dutch lion, water/dikes and sports (sports, especially ice skating, and water management are two of His Majesty’s many interests). King Willem-Alexander is often referred to as the "King of business", helping the Dutch grow their international connections and trade, so make sure you come up with something that represents the King, and the entire country, in a classy way. The King does have a sense of humor, so don't be too serious. When Queen Beatrix announced her abdication, she said: “Responsibility for our country must now lie in the hands of a new generation.” Keep in mind that while you’re designing for a King, he is part of a new generation - so make sure to have fun with it! Standard Business Cards: 1050 x 600 pixels (3.5” x 2”). We’d like you to design the front and back of a business card, leaving the interpretation and layout up to your creativity. Colors: Orange, Red, White, Blue, Black, White and your own creativity. Choose wisely! A Dutch version of the brief is attached below. Make sure to let us know if you prefer feedback to your designs in Dutch.
Brand name to include on the stationery item(s)
His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands
What to avoid
The Netherlands is known as a liberal and progressive country when it comes to its policies on marijuana, prostitution etc., but these images should NOT be featured on the business card. Many people think of the city of Amsterdam when they think of the Netherlands, but the country is a whole lot bigger and more diverse. Only incorporate canal houses and other typical Amsterdam-elements (or prominent features of other cities) if you can do it in an innovative way representing the ENTIRE country. Famous Dutch brands like Heineken, Amstel, KLM and Philips do not have a connection with the King and should not be featured on the business card. Unless you can find an extremely clever or innovative (abstract) way to implement them, please avoid Dutch cliches like clogs, windmills and tulips. ** Please only use original design! Don't get stuck on the traditional esthetics of business card, but try and be as creative as possible! ** Different than other royals around the world, King Willem-Alexander is very in touch with the "common people". Don't make this design too extravagant!
