celong got their new web page design by running a design contest:
University Engineering Department Website
Check out celong's Web page design contest…
We are the civil and environmental engineering department at Virginia Tech. There are five main program areas that cover a wide variety of topic. Our target audience includes current undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, faculty and staff of the department and university. We also want to target prospective students and parents.
The colors we will need to use are Maroon (PMS 208, hex code = 660000), orange (PMS 158, hex code = FF6600), as well as accent colors. The approved university accent colors can be found at http://www.unirel.vt.edu/web/web-guidelines/guidelines-colors.html. We like the look of rounded corner menu tabs, but otherwise, we are open to any ideas for the navigation menu.
Page 1 - Main front page where we will display a changing header photo, news stories, contact and social media information, and the navigation menu. Page 2 - this will be the template used for almost every page on our site. It will be a fairly basic template where a lot of text and few photos will be displayed. We would like to have a sidebar or top menu bar that makes it easy to navigate. Page 3 - This template will be for our five program areas. We want them all to have the same look, but the content, photos, etc. will be different so we do want to reflect that possibility. Each program area has a different focus, but they are still managed under our same department.
What to avoid
We do not want anything that is very complex or difficult to navigate.
Per Virginia Tech branding guidelines, the high level pages must have the Virginia Tech logo (attached), 160 pixels wide, and it needs to be in the upper left corner of the page. No other mark or logo should appear above or to the left of the Virginia Tech logo. Our five program areas are Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Materials, and Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering Program. We would like each of these highlight in some way on the front page that can link to their individual pages that they will each have. We would like our contact information along the footer: The Charles Edward Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering | 200 Patton Hall | Blacksburg, VA 24061 | Tel: (540) 231-6635 | Fax: (540) 231-7532. This will be a responsive design website. Overall, we are looking for a fresh look, with easy navigation, but are open to ideas.
